We need a container dome – a dome that stretches over the two containers to provide us with a modicum of shelter from Australia’s relentless sunshine. Don’t worry, I won’t ask you to imagine it as I’ve taken the expense of having an architect draw up the plans…

So, as it happens, a serendipitous meeting between a brigadier general and surfer led to a bunch of bikers giving me a call to offer their assistance in fundraising for a container dome. What? Not quite following the thread? Let me explain…
Firstly, you will need to understand that Chris and I aren’t just some solo maniacs with a grand plan to hasten to our collective demise in the freezing waters off Vancouver Island. As it happens, we’re building the dory to trial its viability as a rehabilitation tool. We’re doing this within the umbrella of ConnectedBy, a charity that provides the opportunity to learn, share and grow through engaging and challenging creative pursuits. ConnectedBy offers a venue with No Past,No Position, No Pain – this resonates with me, particularly dealing with my challenges with the military.
We’re currently building the dory inside a metal container with an open side that lets the heat and rain in. A dome will enable ConnectedBy to continue to offer the dory build as a rehabilitation tool into the foreseeable future.

As a charity, ConnectedBy was introduced to the Perth Central Chapter of the Military Brotherhood Military Motorcycle Club by Brigadier Brett Chaloner, CSC, Commander of the Australian Army’s 13th Brigade, during a regular catch up of Perth based veteran support organisations. Led by veteran Tassie, the Brotherhood leapt into action and organised a charity ride which they aptly named … Run For Cover.

The day was beautiful and sunny. The Brotherhood sorted out a coffee van and were cooking bacon and egg sangers when the first of the bikes turned up. No word of a lie, I’d say there were about 70 bikers who rolled through the gate for the charity ride. It was amazing and LOUD. So cool!

After a few speeches, the assembled masses finished smashing coffee and bacon into their bearded faces, grunted a bit, polished some errant dust of their steads and then let loose the rumble of engines. In two large packets, the bikers then roared out into the bright sunshine of Perth. What a way to fundraise!!!!
