I like to say we can make anything in wood
David Armstrong-Jones, 2nd Earl of Snowdon
On a quiet day in Autumn I dropped by the boat to spend a few hours shaping the breast hook. The breast hook is a triangular shaped piece that joins the starboard and port sides together at the bow. This in turn strengthens the bow.
Like everything nautical I feel that this is another example of a double entendre. Or perhaps we’ve just become more crude in our age.
The shaping was done in situ, using a file rasp and a small vice to hold it steady while I angled bread hook sides to suit the sloping hull. There’s a lot to be said about whittling wood in the sun overlooking the sea. A fine day indeed.
